A few years ago, I was summonsed to jury duty in Lincoln County, NC. While I never made it to the jury, I did get to see all of the characters in the court room: The plaintiff, the defendant, the judge, the prosecuting attorney and, of course, the defense attorney.
Throughout the years, each of us have seen court shows on TV. We have also watched defendants spend thousands and thousands of dollars on defense attorneys. Good defense attorneys are prized possessions, and every defendant always wants a good defense attorney.
In 1 John 2:1-6, we get into the scene of the Divine courtroom. We know from Scripture that God is the judge (Gen 18:25), Satan is the accuser (Zech 3:1), and every person who has ever lived is on trial. Those on trial, like you and me, need a good Defense Attorney because we are certainly guilty, and the Divine Judge knows it.
Praise the Lord! This text says that we have a PERFECT Defense Attorney, “an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous” (1 John 2:1). Not only does our Advocate plead our case to the Father, but He also takes the blame, guilt, sin, and punishment that we all deserve in His death on the cross. Indeed, Christ is our propitiation. That means that God turns His wrath away from the sinner and puts in on the Savior, whereby the Savior satisfies divine judgment and reconciles the sinner to God.
