Seven Abominations – Part 2

Last week, we began our study of the seven abominations of Proverbs 6:16-19 by looking at the first four:

  1. Haughty eyes
  2. A lying tongue
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood
  4. A heart that devises wicked plans

Today, we will focus on the last three:

  1. Feet that make haste to run to evil
  2. A False witness who breathes out lies
  3. One who sows discord among brothers

As for “hasty feet,” remember the example of Judas.  Jesus told him, “What you are going to do, so quickly” (John 13:27).  The Bible says, “He immediately went out” (John 13:30).  Judas was very quick to “run to evil.”

As for a “false witness,” never forget Potiphar’s wife.  Joseph had done nothing wrong, yet Potiphar’s wife spoke as a false witness against Joseph.  As a result, Potiphar put Joseph in prison for several years (Genesis 39).

As for “sowing discord,” remember Psalm 133 and how the Lord values unity among brothers.  The one who sows discord is the one who intentionally drives a wedge into the unity of the people of God.

Remember, these are abominations: Things that are utterly outrageous to God.  And if they are outrageous to God, they should be outrageous to us as well.
