This year for Advent, we will be remembering how Jesus came to this earth to fulfill the Old Testament Offices and Roles of Prophet, Shepherd, Priest, and King.
Today is the first Sunday of Advent, and we light our first candle to remember that Jesus came to fulfill the Old Testament Office of Prophet.
The Old Testament prophet was specifically called by God and anointed by the Spirit to serve as God’s mouthpiece in revealing his will and decrees. The prophet not only predicted the future but, more importantly, forth-told the intentions of God as revealed by the Holy Spirit.
The Old Testament Prophet was a “Revealer” of God’s truth. But what is amazing about Jesus is that He is both “The Revealer” and “The Revealed.” Jesus “speaks the Word of God” to us, yet “He is the Word of God.” He is the “Truth Proclaimer,” yet he is also “The Truth.” Indeed, Jesus is both the “subject” and “object” of prophecy.
This Christmas season, we remember that Christ came to earth to fulfill the Office of Prophet by being the ultimate and final revelation of God’s will to his people through his Incarnation (John 1:14), through his Word (2 Peter 1:21), and through his Spirit (Titus 3:5).
