Random Results or Gracious Governance?

Remember those first steps of your son or daughter? A memory etched in your mind that will likely last a lifetime.  Waddle…waddle…CRASH…either onto the floor, or hopefully into your arms as you were ready to catch that open-mouthed, wonder-eyed infant.  You do your best to provide boundaries for them so that they don’t get hurt in those first steps, and in some sense you do the same of the rest of their lives.  But you know you can’t stand there to always catch them, to walk in all their trials, and run all their activities with them. But someone can and does.

The Lord promises that “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”  We see that promise played out in the text of 1st Samuel 9.  Some aimlessly wandering donkeys, a small sum of money luckily found to provide as a required gift, random guidance from a few girls gathering water, and a chance meeting with the prophet all woven together to establish the steps of Saul on his way to the kingship.  More significantly, all of these steps were sovereignly established in order that Yahweh might give His people something that they really shouldn’t have demanded in the first place – a king.  Therein lies the marvelous grace and hope that God extended to His people in this passage.  It is the same sovereign grace that the Lord extends to you and me THIS day.

As a believer, the Lord is graciously working out His plan of sanctification to make you more and more into the child that He desires you to be.  He does that through a myriad of apparently disconnected, random events – all, in fact, sovereignly orchestrated to bring about His good purposes for you.
