                                         1 Thessalonians – A Book of Encouragement

1 Thessalonians 1:1

Introduction and Background of Book

  1. Story of encouragement
  2. Everybody needs encouragement – even the biggest, greatest guy on the team!  ~Adam
  3. Trials in Philippi and Thessalonica for Paul, Silas, and Timothy
  4. Paul’s heart of concern in 1 Thes 3:5
  5. Timothy’s encouraging report in 1 Thes 3:6-7
  6. Proverbs 12:25
  7. Encouraged by the Women’s Consolation Videos here at Redeemer

Point 1: Three Missionaries

  1. Paul – consider his background and remember God’s power and grace!
  2. Silas – remember how he was ready to serve, his commitment, and his encouragement!
  3. Timothy – young people, don’t wait till you are older!  Serve God now!  (Phil 2:20 and 1 Tim 4:12)

Point 2: The Church in God

  1. In God the Father – Psalm 91:1
    1. Church at Thessalonica was…
      1. Rejected/Persesuted by opponents
      2. Accepted/Protected by God
  2. In the Lord Jesus Christ
    1. 1 Cor 12 – church is the body of Christ

Point 3: Grace and Peace

  1. Grace: Quote by Richard Phillips and Rom 6:23
  2. Peace: Grace leads to Peace.

Takeaways:

  1. Read 1 Thessalonians and look for words like encourage, exhort, establish, comforted
  2. Receive encouragement from this text!  You are “in the Father” and “in our Lord Jesus Christ” and you have His “grace and peace.”
  3. Be in the business of encouraging others just as the Thessalonians did for Paul and just as Paul, Silas, and Timothy did for others!
